Deposit Requirements for Registering a Single Issue of a Serial Publication

On July 22, 2022 the Copyright Office issued a rule, effective August 22, 2022, liberalizing the deposit requirements for registering a single issue of a serial publication. The amended rule allows applicants whose serials are published in physical format, or in both electronic and physical formats, to submit a single deposit copy for registration. Publishers may submit the deposit copy in electronic format, which will expedite receipt and examination and result in an earlier effective date of registration. Electronic deposit copies submitted under the amended rule must comply with the technical requirements set out in the rule, and applicants are encouraged to use the file-naming conventions set forth on the Office’s website. The mandatory deposit requirements for the Library are not changed by this rule.
