New Registration Certificates

New format to be used for some registration certificates

Note: These instructions and the sample were superseded on May 23, 2005. (Read current version.)

Copyright registration certificates for certain categories of works will be issued in a new format, effective February 14, 2005.  The new format will be used only for certain motion pictures and other audiovisual works registered in class PA, as part of a pilot project.   For all other categories of registrations, certificates will continue to be issued in the current format.  The substantive content of all certificates will remain the same.

The Copyright Office is reengineering its business processes to improve the efficiency and timeliness of its public services.  Under the reengineered process, registration certificates will be generated from registration data stored in an electronic information system. Unlike the current certificate, the new certificate will not be a reproduction of the paper application form.  In the pilot project beginning February 14, 2005, the Office will test the new system on registrations for motion pictures and other class PA audiovisual works only.  Full implementation of the new system for all classes of works is scheduled for Fall 2006.
